Drowning by Numbers is my favourite and has remained in my all-time Top 20 ever since. It is probably Greenaway's least bizarre and most accessible work and the one that strays furthest from being another moving baroque painting, but it is just as highly structured and densely infused with statistics-like enumerations (another common trait of Greenaway's movies).

There’s a literal counting game going on throughout, with the numbers 1 through 100 hidden in plain sight in his various tableaus, worked into the sets, costumes, props, or other background details.
By numbers, the three husbands are drowned, in this slightly absurd, fairy tale-like Greenaway dramedy. By its release Drowning by Numbers won awards for its direction and artistic contribution at Cannes Film Festival and Seattle International Festival, as well as the Audience Award at Warsaw International Film Festival.

Review by nick ★★★★ 3. In Drowning by Numbers, director Peter Greenaway created another one of his naked, bizarre world where clothes are always optional, and women always take the central stage. With its symbolic feminist message set in a modern dank fairy tale, Drowning by Numbers is simply as thought-provoking as it's weird and dark.
