He said that this was a homage to the scene in Vivre sa vie when Anna Karina watches another Dreyer s film, La Passion de Jeanne d Arc. Carl Theodor Dreyer s Gertrud (1964) in Richard Linklater s It s Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books (1988).
In fact, it's kind of terrible. But it's understandably terrible, and what's more, it's forgivably terrible. The title--"It's Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books," seems to be insinuating that the only way to truly learn something is by doing it, and that is exactly what Linklater is doing here, in his first attempt at a feature film.
