Ordet, based on a 1932 play by Danish playwright and Lutheran country priest Kaj Munk, manages to unusually feel both excessively theatrical and incredibly cinematic at the same time. Directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, and the sole movie in his filmography to be both a critical and financial success, and deservedly winning the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival.

Lean, quiet, deeply serious, populated with odd religious obsessives, it takes place in winter in Denmark in 1925, in a rural district that has a cold austere beauty.
