  3. Old Maid is a girls' game and any number may play. Three queens are removed from a standard pack of 52 cards, leaving the fourth queen representing the "Old Maid". Players may cut for deal, the one cutting the highest card dealing first. Aces are high. The cards are dealt equally all round and face down.

  5. Play continues clockwise, with players continuing to draw from the player behind them. A player is safe from becoming the Old Maid when either (1) the player pairs all the cards in his/her hand, or (2) the player lays down a pair and only has one card left. The player’s last card is then drawn by the next player leaving him/her with no cards.

  6. Old Maid Rules. The person left of the dealer plays first. On each turn, a player selects a card randomly from the player behind them (to their right) After a card is drawn, if paired, it must be played immediately by placing the paired set face up on the table. The players turn is over and play continues clockwise.

  7. Some may regard The Old Maid as just another old-fashioned weepy. Those of a more discerning and generous nature will recognise that it is far more than that. This is one of cinema's darkest and most compelling morality plays on the futility of hatred - the irony of which was presumbaly lost on the two great ladies who made it.
