Officially, the aim was to inspect Russia’s North American possessions, but its real, secret mission was to head for Japan to open it up to trade.

Strongly criticising the Soviet philological tradition which saw Goncharov’s work as an anti-colonial text, she argues that the famous Russian writer sought to justify the expansion of Russian and other European empires in Africa, Asia, and Siberia.

The first four of Bojanowska’s six main chapters spell out the novelist’s reactions to Britain, South Africa, China, Japan and Siberia (which he traversed on the way back from the Far East).
