Wellington College, Crowthorne was founded under Royal Charter from Queen Victoria, as a national memorial to this Great Duke following his death in 1852. Once built Wellington College was opened in 1859 as a boy’s boarding school for the education of orphans of the British armed forces but has now expanded to become one of the nation’s co-educational boarding schools.
Wellington has remained on its beautiful and extensive site in Berkshire since its foundation. Girls were admitted to the Sixth Form in 1975, and the school became fully co-educational in 2006. The College is now home to 1100 pupils, 80% of whom board and some of whom are still Foundationers.
Wellington College inhabits a huge and imposing campus in leafy Berkshire, with its prime location being another attraction for both domestic and overseas families. The grounds and facilities are breathtaking, a fantastic mix of old cloisters, seamlessly blended with modern steel and glass conversions, interactive screens, and white-board-painted walls.

Wellington College, founded as a living memorial to Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, was opened in 1859, and our digital archive contains material from the foundation right up to the present day.
