Without Changing Places toilets, the person with disabilities is put at risk, and families are forced to risk their own health and safety by changing their loved one on a toilet floor.
Changing Places Ireland campaign, which aims to introduce fully accessible toilets to public places such as shopping centres, libraries and sporting arenas around Ireland, was established in 2014. Changing Places facilities are different from mainstream accessible toilets in that they include both a hoist and a height-adjustable changing bench.
Changing Places facilities are larger than standard accessible toilets and have extra features and more space to meet the needs of people with disability and their carers. A Changing Places toilet facility allows individuals with high support needs to take part in all elements of community life, without having to limit their time out due to concerns about being able to access a suitable toilet.
