U.S. Army War College. The AWC, established at Washington Barracks (now Fort Lesley J. McNair) in Washington, D.C., in 1901, traces its roots to the aftermath of the Spanish-American War. Although the United States easily defeated the Spanish in that conflict, the war revealed weaknesses in the U.S. military.

Military Officers. Military Officers attending NWC must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and must attain the grade of 0-5 before the academic year starts. Officers will also have a demonstrated record of outstanding performance and have the potential for future growth in positions of senior strategic leadership.
The National War College (NWC) mission is to educate future leaders of the Armed Forces, Department of State, and other civilian agencies for high-level policy, command and staff responsibilities by conducting a senior-level course of study in national security strategy. The curriculum emphasizes the joint and interagency perspective.

The National War College has occupied Roosevelt Hall since the founding of the College, except for 1998-99 during the Hall’s renovation. The College was incorporated into the National Defense University in 1976 when the latter was created as the country’s pre-eminent joint professional military education center.
