Mary was a member of the House of Dunkeld and was Countess of Boulogne by her marriage. Mary was the youngest of eight children. Her brothers included: Edmund, Ethelred, Edgar, King of Alba, Alexander I of Scotland and David I of Scotland. Mary had only one sister, Matilda of Scotland, first wife of Henry I of England.

Through her mother Margaret, the daughter of Edward Atheling, otherwise known as 'Edward the Exile', Mary was a descendant of the Saxon House of Wessex.

Mary was a member of the House of Dunkeld by birth, and was Countess of Boulogne by marriage. Mary died in 1116, nine years before her husband. She was buried at the Cluniac abbey at Bermondsey.
