The Little Rock Nine were a group of nine African American students enrolled in Little Rock Central High School in 1957. Their enrollment was followed by the Little Rock Crisis , in which the students were initially prevented from entering the racially segregated school by Orval Faubus , the Governor of Arkansas .
It was renamed Little Rock Central High School in 1955 when construction began on Hall High School in western Little Rock. Jim and Judy Lester describe the school's location in their book Greater Little Rock: "Little Rock's largest park in the late nineteenth century was West End Park, covering a six-block area between Fourteenth Street, Sixteenth Street, Park Avenue and Jones Street.
