New Moon. This is the invisible phase of the Moon, with the illuminated side of the Moon facing the Sun and the night side facing Earth. In this phase, the Moon is in the same part of the sky as the Sun and rises and sets with the Sun. Not only is the illuminated side facing away from the Earth, it’s also up during the day!

6 de mai. de 2024 · Is there actually a “dark side" of the Moon? No. The Moon rotates on its own axis at the same rate that it orbits around Earth. That means we always see the same side of the Moon from our position on Earth. The side we don't see gets just as much light, so a more accurate name for that part of the Moon is the "far side."

To the left of that line are the familiar maria Crisium (the circular spot near the 9 o'clock position), Marginis, Smythii (both east of Crisium), Humboldtianum (in the north), Australe (near the south pole), and the eastern edge of Fecunditatis.

This updated view of the far side was produced from measurements of the moon's surface made by NASA's LRO spacecraft. Just like the near side, the appearance of the far side cycles through phases due to the changing angle of the sun as the moon orbits Earth.
