Graça, at only 29 years of age, became FRELIMO’s state secretary of education in Mozambique’s first post-independence government. In 1975 Graça married Samora Machel, a hero of Mozambique’s liberation struggle and the nation’s first president. Graça already was an important government figure and the only woman in FRELIMO’s cabinet.
