Romaine Brooks, née Beatrice Romaine Goddard, à Rome le 1 er mai 1874 et morte à Nice le 7 décembre 1970, est une peintre américaine [1]. Comprenant essentiellement des portraits , avec une palette sombre dominée par les gris , son œuvre est proche des mouvements symbolistes et esthètes de la fin du XIX e siècle, particulièrement des travaux de James Abbott McNeill Whistler .

Born to well-off American parents who separated shortly after her birth, Romaine Brooks was abandoned by her mother, an eccentric woman obsessed by the mental illness of her eldest son. In 1895, she settled in Paris against the wishes of her mother, who nevertheless gave her an allowance.
