Hij speelde in de traditie van Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner en Kenny Barron en was invloedrijk in de jaren tachtig en negentig.
Mulgrew Miller war in seiner Jugend früh von vielfältiger Musik umgeben. Er spielte Gospelmusik in der Kirche in Memphis und Rhythm & Blues auf Tanzveranstaltungen.
