In 990, Metropolitan Michael consecrated St. Theodore, who accompanied him, as bishop and appointed him to the newly built pulpit in Rostov the Great. St. Theodore immediately began the construction of the first Christian church in Rostov, originally wooden. It was consecrated in honor of the Most Holy Theotokos and stood for 168 years.
