Bohally had been established as a new purpose built intermediate school in 1956. Upon opening, all intermediate students at Marlborough College had been transferred to Bohally. Prior to the establishment of Marlborough Girls College, Marlborough College had over 1242 pupils on its role, making it the third largest secondary school in New Zealand.

Marlborough is well know for its academic excellence, but it also has facilities to match. Being a traditional boarding school, it remains a vibrant place at the weekend providing a genuine seven-day-a-week boarding programme. Originally a boys’ school, two thirds of students are still boys and half of the 330 girls are in the sixth form.
