Despite the impressive successes of the label- both pre-and post-Riviera’s departure – the 1980s saw a swing back to major label dominance and many smaller labels were being swallowed up by bigger ones.

In a 1995 interview with Peter Doggett (found on the limited edition Rykodisc release An Overview Disc), former Stiff Records labelmate Elvis Costello mentions that, due to their unusual vocal styles, Stiff had originally envisioned a split LP between himself and Eric, with each artist taking one side of the record. History. In 1981, Ian Dury left Stiff for Polydor Records, and, as a cash-in for the Christmas market, Stiff commissioned session musicians to record a version of the Hokey Cokey with a Dury-soundalike vocal from Martin Kershaw, whose credits included guitar on "Kung Fu Fighting" and "Dance Yourself Dizzy", and playing banjo on 120 episodes of the Muppet Show.
