Pocahontas, daughter of the powerful paramount chief Powhatan , was born about 1596. Pocahontas was a nickname meaning “playful one,” given to her by her father. Her formal names were Amonute and Matoaka. Paramount chief Powhatan had numerous wives, and Pocahontas had a large number of half-brothers and half-sisters.
