Bentinck was privy to the cross-party negotiations which preceded the introduction of the revised reform bill, and shared Richmond’s concern ‘that the altered bill would be, in fact, more objectionable than the last, inasmuch as it is more democratic in its tendency’. 37 He voted for its second reading, 17 Dec. 1831.
Portland was born William Henry, Lord Titchfield in April 1738 into an aristocratic family at Bulstrode Park in Buckinghamshire. He was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. He was briefly MP for the seat of Weobley in 1761 but was elevated to the House of Lords upon the death of his father the following year.
