Among their number were Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forester, T.S. Eliot, Vanessa Bell, and Vita Sackville-West. Lionel Bertrand Sackville-West, 6th Baron Sackville (30 May 1913 – 27 March 2004) was a stockbroker and member of the British peerage. In 1965, he became the sixth Baron Sackville. Born in London, Sackville-West was the eldest son of Bertrand Sackville-West and Eva Inigo-Jones.

Victoria Mary Sackville-West, known as Vita, was born at Knole in 1892 and grew up there, the only child of Lionel Edward Sackville-West (later 3rd Baron Sackville) and his cousin, Victoria Sackville-West. She loved Knole but was unable to inherit the estate due to the laws of primogeniture dictating that only men could inherit property.
