House of Lorraine. 1867 – Maximilian I executed by Liberal republicans. The House of Lorraine (German: Haus Lothringen) originated as a cadet branch of the House of Metz. It inherited the Duchy of Lorraine in 1473 after the death without a male heir of Nicholas I, Duke of Lorraine.

Charles 10:05, 12 July 2006 (UTC) [ reply] Actually, I think that 'House of Oldenburg' refers to the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, in Niedersachsen (old Oldenburg state), which is where the Oldenburg Dynasty originated. They didn't inherit Oldenburg, Schleswig-Holstein, until 1460, at the death of a maternal uncle.
Briefly, under Louis VII (1120–1180), the House of Capet rose in their power in France. Louis married Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122–1204) and so became duke – an advantage which had been eagerly grasped by his father, Louis VI (1081–1137), when Eleanor's father, William X, had asked of the king in his will to secure a good marriage for the young duchess.
