Abraham J. Heschel (1907-1972), born in Poland, moved to the United States in 1940. A professor at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, Heschel became an active and well-known participant in the Civil Rights movement and the protests against the Vietnam War.

Abraham Joshua Heschel nació en Varsovia, en 1907, en el seno de una familia jasídica. Estudió filosofía y crítica de la Biblia en Berlín. Durante una estancia en Frankfurt, fue arrestado por la Gestapo y deportado a Polonia, donde fue profesor en Varsovia. Más tarde emigró a Londres y finalmente, en 1940, a Nueva York.
