Mark Gertler, born Marks Gertler, was a British painter of figure subjects, portraits and still-life. His early life and his relationship with Dora Carrington were the inspiration for Gilbert Cannan's novel Mendel. The characters of Loerke in D. H. Lawrence's Women in Love, and Gombauld in Aldous Huxley's Crome Yellow were based on him.

Trees at Sanatorium, Scotland. After a collapse in health and the diagnosis of tuberculosis, Gertler was confined to Banchory Sanatorium, near Aberdeen, in November 1920 until May 1921. Initially forbidden to paint for long periods, he eventually left with nine completed paintings, three of them landscapes, all observed from his window.
