As Jim Thome stepped to the mound for a ceremonial first pitch on Wednesday, Illinois Central College president Dr. Sheila Quirk-Bailey told the crowd the retired slugger said he’d rather hit the first pitch. Alas, the ICC product and Baseball Hall of Famer with 612 home runs to his credit didn’t take a swing.
Jim Thome played 22 seasons for 6 teams, including the Indians and White Sox. He had a .276 batting average, 2,328 hits, 612 home runs, 1,699 RBIs and 1,583 runs scored. He won 1 Comeback Player of the Year award and 1 Silver Slugger award. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018.

But, hey, it was issued in the heart of the Junk Wax Era, even if it came in those funny little plastic packs instead of real wax.
