Even for a religious agnostic like myself, this work by the Protestant theologian Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971) is a wonderful read. 'The Nature and Destiny of Man' (two volumes, 1943), was ranked by Modern Library (an American publishing company which later morphed into Random House) as one of the top 20 nonfiction books of the twentieth century.
