He was taken care of by his niece and a young woman, Florence Dugdale (1879-1937), who had been introduced to him while Emma was still alive. Florence was a Dorset schoolmaster’s daughter. She was a shy, charming woman with some literary aspirations who had published a few books for children and also written poetry, though with little success.
Love and respect turned to hostility and bitterness in the last years of Emma's life. At the same time, Hardy fell in love with a young writer - 39 years his junior - Florence Dugdale. Following Emma's sudden and unexpected death, Hardy married Florence. His profound experience of and reaction to Emma's death affected him intensely.

She really did keep those diaries chronicling her dissatisfaction with the marriage: in two letters Florence Dugdale, who became Hardy’s second wife, records his horrified reaction at discovering them.
