Concept and creative process. ‘Jackanory' was a BBC children's television series which was a daily programme originally broadcast between 1965 and 1996, which featured children's stories, brought to life by actors. It was designed to stimulate an interest in reading and the show’s title came from an old English nursery rhyme.
Jackanory was eventually bumped from its weekday teatime slot to 8.35 am on Sundays, before the BBC finally pulled the plug on the programme in 1996 when it announced that 30 jobs in children’s television would go, with more repeats to be shown.
