I saw Fantastic Voyage when it was released and enjoyed it with reservations. I watched it again many years later but don’t’ recall any reaction other than those same reservations. On this third viewing, having acquired many more layers of pulp in the interim, I enjoyed it more than ever, though those darn reservations keep lurking around.

Fantastic Voyage is a vertically scrolling shooter for one player. The premise of the game follows that of the 1966 movie of the same name; you and your submarine have been miniaturized and injected into the blood stream of an ill patient. Your goal is to prevent the patient from dieing by locating deadly blood clots and destroying them.

Jerome Bixby originally envisioned the film as a Jules Verne-styled period piece a la the fad for retro-Victorian science-fiction created by Fantastic Voyage director Richard Fleischer’s own 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954).
