9 de jan. de 2024 · Giants legend Willie Mays, who played alongside McCovey for parts of 14 seasons in San Francisco, used to say McCovey "could hit a ball farther than anyone I ever played with." Bob Gibson and Reggie Jackson both called McCovey the "scariest" hitter in baseball, while manager Sparky Anderson estimated McCovey could hit 80 homers in a season if teams pitched to him more instead of around him.

Willie McCovey was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1968, in his first year on the ballot. (Doug McWilliams/National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum) McCovey retired during the 1980 season, finishing his career with 521 home runs, 1,555 RBI and 260 intentional walks. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1986, and passed away on Oct. 31, 2018.

Reds manager Sparky Anderson, who often ordered his pitchers to work around him, once said, “I walked Willie McCovey so many times, he could have walked to the moon on all those walks.”
