These variations in formality, also called stylistic variation, are know as registers in linguistics. Registers can be determined by factors such a social occasion, context, purpose and audience. They are marked by a variety of specialized vocabulary and turns of phrases, colloquialisms, the use of jargon, and a difference in intonation and pace.
