The Royal Victorian Order is an order of knighthood awarded by the sovereign of the United Kingdom and several Commonwealth realms.
Date: 1896 - present. Royal Victorian Order, British order of knighthood instituted by Queen Victoria in 1896 to reward personal services rendered the monarch. As it is a family order, conferment of this honour is solely at the discretion of the British sovereign.
The Order was originally comprised of five classes, with the top two classes holding the titles (Sir/Dame); Knights and Dames Grand Cross, Knights and Dames Commander, Commander, Member of the Fourth Class, and Member of the Fifth Class.
In the Royal Victorian Order and the Order of the British Empire, the grade of Commander is senior to the grade of Lieutenant and Officer, respectively, but junior to that of Knight Commander or Dame Commander. In the British Venerable Order of Saint John, a Commander ranks below a Knight.
