These lectures are open to the public as well as to students and faculty. No tuition is charged, no attendance is taken, no credit is given. By Kara Platoni. In 1957, a lanky, bespectacled college student named Donald Knuth caught a glimpse of a beautiful stranger through a window and fell deeply in love. The object of his affection blinked enticingly back at him. It was an IBM Type 650, one of the earliest mass-produced computers and the first Knuth had ever seen.
Enquanto estudava em Ohio, Knuth entrou em contato com o computador comercial IBM 650. Depois de ler o manual do computador, ele decidiu reescrever o assembly e o compilador da máquina que ele usava em sua escola, pois acreditava que conseguia fazer algo melhor. Durante a sua estadia em Case, Knuth migrou de física para matemática.
