Arthur Wellesley was born in Dublin, Ireland in late April or early May 1769, and was the fourth son of Garret Wesley, Earl of Mornington and his wife Anne. Though initially educated locally, Wellesley later attended Eton (1781-1784), before receiving additional schooling in Brussels, Belgium.
As Horatio Nelson rose to fame in the 1790s the future Duke of Wellington – then Sir Arthur Wellesley – was serving in India. Wellesley only returned to Britain in 1805, but it so happened that his visit to London to solicit a new command coincided with Nelson’s brief return home after his abortive pursuit of the French fleet from the Mediterranean to the West Indies and back.
Arthur Wellesley was born in Dublin in 1769, the third son of the 1st Lord Mornington and Anne Hill, daughter of the Viscount Dungannon. His childhood was spend at Dungan Castle, Ireland, the family seat. Family life changed dramatically when his father died. Arthur was 12 and just about to go to Eton.
