Through an online search (only in german language) in the List of Municipalities, you can quickly and easily obtain relevant information on every municipality in Germany - for example, number of inhabitants, area, official municipality code (AGS), postal code and address of the municipal administrations.
As of 2009 Germany is divided into 403 districts (Kreise) on municipal level, these consist of 301 rural districts and 102 urban districts. Each of the states of Bavaria, Saxony, and Thuringia officially describes itself as a "state" (Staat) and more specifically as a "free state" (Freistaat).
Germany is made up of fifteen regional districts, which are the equivalent of counties. These were once separate countries, which became only loosely bound together through years of conquest and the succession of great empires. It wasn’t until the 1940’s when Hitler came to power that the country was successfully linked as one sovereign nation.
