Native Son has almost all the right ingredients, but the chef seems a little absent-minded. He has Oprah, Elizabeth McGovern, Matt Dillon, and freshman performer Victor Love all doing their damnedest, DP Thomas Burstyn shooting the film with a tremendous balance of cold realism and noirish style, & Richard Wesley penning an acceptable adaptation, and in walks this director to screw it all up.
Native Son. Native Son (1940) is a novel written by the American author Richard Wright. It tells the story of 20-year-old Bigger Thomas, a black youth living in utter poverty in a poor area on Chicago's South Side in the 1930s. Thomas accidentally kills a white woman at a time when racism is at its peak and he pays the price for it.
