Ernest Rutherford, Nelson bárója ( Brightwater, 1871. augusztus 30. – Cambridge 1937. október 19.) új-zélandi születésű brit fizikus, az atomfizika egyik megalapítója, a róla elnevezett atommodell kidolgozója. Physicist Ernest Rutherford envisioned the atom as a miniature solar system, with electrons orbiting around a massive nucleus, and as mostly empty space, with the nucleus occupying only a very small part of the atom. The neutron had not yet been discovered when Rutherford proposed his model, which had a nucleus consisting only of protons.

Ernest Rutherford, reconocido físico nuclear del Siglo XX, es conocido por sus importantes contribuciones al campo de la física y por su propuesta del modelo planetario del átomo.
