The history of Tsinghua SEM dates back to 1926, when Tsinghua University established its Faculty of Economics. In 1956, when the Chinese government decided to regroup higher education institutions in an attempt to build a Soviet-style education system, the Faculty of Economics was separated from Tsinghua and merged into other universities.
Li suffered a heart attack in 1993 and began to lose influence within the Party to first-ranking vice premier Zhu Rongji, a strong advocate for economic liberalization. In that year, when Li made his annual work report to the Politburo, he was forced to make over seventy changes to make the plans acceptable to Deng. [ 2 ]

Jiang manteve-se discreto na presidência até o falecimento de Deng Xiaoping, em 1997. A grande estrela do desenvolvimento econômico chinês durante sua presidência foi o ministro da economia, Zhu Rongji, que modernizou a política econômica do país. Após 1997 Jiang essencialmente manteve as políticas de Deng Xiaoping e Zhu Rongji.
