Etymologi. Navnet Punjab betyr "land av fem elver" eller "de fem elvers land". "Punj" betyr fem og "aab" betyr vann. Ordet er en kombinasjon av de persiske ordene panj (پنج) og āb (آب). Navnet henspiller på elvene Beas, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi og Sutlej. Idag er det kun Jhelum, Chenab og Ravi som renner gjennom den pakistanske Punjab.
