Text from the book: 'The Presiding Officers of the Parliament of New South Wales', Sydney, 1995 William Wentworth was born at sea in 1790, the son of D'Arcy Wentworth, later the Principal Surgeon of the Civil Medical Department, and Catherine Crowley, a convict. He went to England to be educated from 1803 to 1810, returning in 1816 to study law.

Returning from England as a twenty year old, William Charles Wentworth (1790-1872) embarked on a series of youthful adventures, including riding Gig, his father's grey gelding, to victory in the Hyde Park races. His desire to obtain new grazing land led him to join William Lawson and Gregory Blaxland in their quest to cross the Blue Mountains.
