Thomas Hardy (Higher Bockhampton, 2 de junho de 1840 – Max Gate, 11 de janeiro de 1928) foi um novelista e poeta inglês. Autor de obras de grande importância, conhecido pelo pessimismo radical que caracteriza os seus romances. Em seu período de maturidade ( 1878 - 1895 ), escreveu obras que se tornaram clássicos da literatura inglesa.
Florence Emily Hardy, née Dugdale, was a writer of children's stories and the second wife and, later, biographer of Thomas Hardy. Florence was the daughter of school headmaster Edward Dugdale. She attended National Infants School in Enfield for two years until 1886, when she went to St Andrew's Girls School.

She really did keep those diaries chronicling her dissatisfaction with the marriage: in two letters Florence Dugdale, who became Hardy’s second wife, records his horrified reaction at discovering them.
