She later said she wondered if this timing were auspicious. She was born into a family of the Protestant Anglo-Irish gentry on a 6,000 acre estate and was educated at home.

In 1880 she married a neighboring landowner and member of Parliament, Sir William Henry Gregory; her literary career did not begin until after his death in 1892. In 1896 she met William Butler Yeats and became his lifelong friend and patron.
