Dublin, the eldest of five sons and two daughters of Abraham Stoker (1799–1876), a senior civil servant in Dublin Castle, and Charlotte Matilda Blake Stoker (née Thornley), a voluntary social reformer, of Co. Sligo, daughter of Capt. Thomas Thornley, of the 43rd light infantry.
