Biographie. Charles Lyell war das älteste von zehn Kindern. Sein gleichnamiger Vater, der Botaniker Charles Lyell, weckte frühzeitig das Interesse für die Naturwissenschaften. Er besuchte nach mehreren Privatschulen ab 1816 das Exeter College von Oxford und widmete sich neben anderen auf Anregung von William Buckland auch der Geologie.
