Little is known about his early life, but he likely attended Magdalen College, Oxford. Lyly served as a courtier and gained favor with Queen Elizabeth I, becoming a prominent figure in the Elizabethan literary scene.

Instead, Burghley got him a position as secretary to his son-in-law, Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford. Humanism taught Lyly to love the classics.
