In 1837 the rather attractive Miss Sophia Amelia Peabody met her neighbour Nathaniel Hawthorne as he came to call on Miss Elizabeth Peabody. Elizabeth had helped to bring Nathaniel Hawthorne's talent to a wider recognition drawing the attention of the Ralph Waldo Emerson circle to Hawthorne.
Elizabeth Palmer Peabody, (May 16, 1804-January 3, 1894) was a teacher and educational reformer, founder of the Kindergarten system in the United States, and an advocate of Native American rights to education. She was a prominent figure within the Transcendentalism Movement publishing their literary journal, The Dial, in 1842 and 1843.
The diary is Sophia Amelia Peabody Hawthorne's, kept in Boston, in 1829. The bulk of the collection is correspondence, dating from 1822 to [1853], written by Peabody to her sisters, Mary and Sophia [afterwards Mary Mann and Sophia Hawthorne] during the period 1833-1835, when they were in Cuba; the correspondence was designated by her as her "Cuba journal."
