Robert Browning (1812-1889) From his birth on May 7, 1812, Robert Browning was acknowledged to be a very clever child; he had aspired to be a poet from his earliest days in the south London village of Camberwell. His parents supported him in this endeavor until he was in his thirties and married Elizabeth Barrett.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning was born on 6 March 1806 in Coxhoe Hall, County Durham. She was the eldest of 12 children born to Edward Barrett Moulton Barrett and Mary Graham Clarke. In November 1809 she moved with her family to Hope End, near Ledbury in Herefordshire, where the family lived until 1832, when financial reversals forced her father to sell the house and much of the enormous estate.

On 12 September 1846, Robert Browning married Elizabeth Barrett at St. Marylebone Parish Church, London. They left a week later for Florence, Italy, where they spent the remainder of their married life. Their Florentine home, called Casa Guidi, has been preserved as a memorial to the poets.
