Pierre Bonnard was a member of the Symbolist group of painters known as Les Nabis ("prophets" or "seers"), and so subscribed to the Nabi doctrine of abandoning three-dimensional modeling in favor of flat color areas. However, although Bonnard was a member of this group, he was not interested in obscure Symbolist subject matter and was not a mystic.
Pierre Bonnard wurde als Sohn eines Beamten geboren. Er studierte an der Sorbonne zuerst Rechtswissenschaften, bevor er zum Kunststudium an der Académie Julian wechselte, wo er Bekanntschaft mit den Malern Maurice Denis , Henri-Gabriel Ibels (1867–1936), Paul Ranson und Paul Sérusier schloss.

Pierre Bonnard (født 3. oktober 1867 i Fontenay-aux-Roses, død 23. januar 1947 i Le Cannet) var en fransk postimpressionistisk maler. Medstifter af kunstnergruppen Les Nabis . Bonnard blev efter faderens ønske jurist og arbejdede som sådan en kort periode, før kunsten i 1880'erne blev hans hverv.
