Clare College is one of the colleges of the University of Cambridge, England. It opened in 1326, so it is the second oldest. Its first name was University Hall but it was changed to Clare Hall in 1338. This was because Elizabeth de Clare, granddaughter of Edward I, gave money to the college. In 1856 it changed name again to its current one.
In preparation for Clare College’s septcentenary in 2026, the College has committed to restoring and renewing Old Court. The purpose is to protect and conserve this vibrant centre of Clare life, ensuring that the Grade I listed building is equipped to meet the needs of a twenty-first century education.

Clare College was originally founded in 1326 by the Chancellor of Cambridge as University Hall. However, it very quickly had financial problems and within a decade only had the funds for 10 scholars. Lady Elizabeth de Clare generously gave the college a large amount of money. By 1339 it was known as Clare Hall (later changed to Clare College).
The Secret Histories workshops will take place on Wednesday evenings at 5-6pm. The series began on Wednesday 17th April and will conclude on Wednesday 5th June. While it is not compulsory to attend every session, we encourage you to attend as many sessions as you can, including the workshops on topics you haven't come across before.
