Harvey Mansfield is William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of Government at Harvard University, where he has been on the faculty since 1962. A leading conservative intellectual and political theorist, he is the author and co-translator of studies of major political philosophers such as Aristotle, Burke, Machiavelli, Tocqueville, and Hobbes.

As employed by Plato and Aristotle, thumos refers to the “part of the soul that makes us want to insist on our own importance.” Mansfield believes that modern political science has excluded thumos, and as a result has narrowed its understanding of what politics is really about.
