In August of 1942, Gerhart Riegner, the World Jewish Congress's representative in Geneva, Switzerland, told an American diplomat that Nazi leaders had a plan to gather Jewish people under their contol in the occupied territories of eastern Europe and murder them there.
In 1933, when Riegner, his parents, and his two sisters were suspended from their respective positions and schools, he immigrated to France. In 1935 he moved to Geneva, where he was appointed to head the office of the World Jewish Congress.
